Moving glossary

Every word your movers use, explained in plain English. No jargon, no confusion.

Articles List A

The detailed inventory of items being moved, with quantity and condition. Signed by both the customer and crew supervisor before loading. Critical for insurance claims.

Bilty B

The lorry receipt or transport document issued for goods movement, especially interstate. Required for legal transport. Also called LR (lorry receipt).

Bubble Wrap B

Air-cushioned plastic sheeting used to wrap fragile items like glassware, mirrors, electronics. Comes in small (10mm) and large (25mm) bubble sizes.

Carrier C

The vehicle used for transport — open or enclosed, single-vehicle or multi-vehicle. For cars, "open carrier" = visible truck; "enclosed" = covered, used for luxury cars.

Corrugated Box C

The standard moving carton with fluted middle layer for strength. Single-walled = books/light items. Double-walled = kitchenware/heavy items.

Door-to-Door D

Service that includes pickup from your source address and delivery to destination address. Standard for Gati moves; some competitors only offer "godown-to-godown".

Dismantling D

Taking apart furniture (wardrobes, beds, modular kitchens) for transport. Reassembled at destination. Included in Standard and Premium packages.

E-way Bill E

Electronic waybill required for goods worth over ₹50,000 transported between states. Generated on the GST portal. Gati handles this for you.

Enclosed Carrier E

Covered/sealed transport vehicle, mainly for luxury and exotic cars. Higher cost (₹10/km onwards) but full protection from weather and road dust.

Fragile F

Items that need extra care during packing — glassware, ceramics, paintings, mirrors, electronics. Marked with red "FRAGILE" stickers on cartons.

Godown G

Indian term for warehouse. Gati operates 6 climate-controlled godowns across India for short and long-term storage.

Hauling H

The act of transporting goods, usually long-distance or interstate. "Hauling charge" = cost of road transport, typically calculated per km.

IBA Approved I

Indian Banks' Association certification — recognises packers/movers that meet quality and reliability standards. Gati has been IBA approved since 2019.

Inventory List I

Same as articles list. The complete written record of what's being moved, with condition notes (new/old, working/non-working, scratches/dents).

Loading Charge L

The cost of physically lifting items into the truck. Increases with floor (above 2nd floor without lift) and quantity.

LR (Lorry Receipt) L

Same as bilty. Legal document issued by the transporter as proof of goods received and accepted for transport.

Open Carrier O

Uncovered car-carrying truck (visible from outside). Cheaper than enclosed (₹6/km onwards), used for standard sedans/hatchbacks. Same safety, no weather protection.

Packing List P

Box-by-box record of what's inside each carton. Helps with unpacking and claims if anything is missing or damaged.

RTO Documentation R

Regional Transport Office paperwork required for vehicle transport across states — RC, NOC, insurance copy. Gati handles this end-to-end for car/bike transport.

Stretch Film S

Thin plastic film wound around furniture and appliances to prevent dust and minor scratches. Also bundles drawers and doors so they don't open in transit.

Survey (Pre-move) S

Free inspection of your home — physical or video — to assess volume of items, identify special handling needs, and lock a final quote. Takes 20-30 minutes.

Transit Insurance T

Insurance that covers your goods while they're being transported. Gati includes this in every move — ₹50,000 (Basic) to ₹5 lakh (Premium).

Tempo T

Small commercial vehicle (Tata Ace, Mahindra Bolero) used for local moves. Capacity: about a 1 BHK worth of items. Cheapest mover option.

Wooden Crating W

Custom-built wooden box around items needing maximum protection — bikes, antiques, large mirrors, expensive electronics. Costs ₹500-2,000 per crate depending on size.
